It is well known that the core stock of the collection of the
Budapest Museum of Fine Arts comprises works purchased
by Károly Pulszky. Our knowledge of the director’s
purchases abroad is based on documents, invoices
and letters kept in the Archives of the museum. A great
part of these were published in the catalogue of the Pulszky
Károly in memoriam exhibition (editor László Mravik,
1988). It revealed that the majority of works standing for
the Italian school were bought from or through the good
offices of Florentine art dealers between 1893 and 1895.
The Pulszky family lived in Florence between 1860 and
1864. During that time the father Ferenc Pulszky visited
the galleries of the best known art dealers such as Marco
Guastalla and Alessandro Foresi. From the next decade,
young Károly also appeared on the art market of Florence
as a customer. In these years the sales and transfer of art
works abroad were supervised by the regional office of
the Rome-based Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione headed
by the director of the Regia Reale Gallerie e Musei di
Firenze. Ufficio Esportazione still active today was only
established in 1909, but earlier export cases can also be researched in its archives. The export permits for art works
to be shipped to Hungary in 1893–95 clearly reveal that
Károly Pulszky also transported the works he had bought
from local art dealers with the permission of this office.
The present paper highlights the export permits related
to Pulszky’s purchases of murals in Florence. The documents
reveal that a somewhat larger number of frescoes
came to the museum from Florentine art dealers than
thought earlier, and our knowledge of the Italian fresco
collection of the museum could be extended with some
new information. It can also be specified whom Károly
Pulszky bought works from, to whom he regularly returned
in Florence. He had three permanent suppliers:
Emilio Costantini, Achille Glisenti and Luigi Resimini.
He made occasional purchases from another three dealers,
Elia Volpi, Domenico Caligo and Sabatina Forti.

Mariano Rocchi, mercante d’arte di Perugia, e Paolo Lunghi, il primo fotografo di Assisi, parteciparono in gran parte alla vendità dei monumenti medioevali e rinascimentali d’Umbria nell’ultimo decennio dell’XIX secolo. Lunghi ha venduto nel 1895 a Károly Pulszky, il primo direttore del Museo di Belle Arti di Budapest, due pitture murali raffiguranti la Madonna col Bambino e il Vir Dolorum che provengono stando ai documenti relativi all’acquisizione da Trevi. Si tratta di opere che sono state eseguite indipendemente l’una dall’altra. Dalla galleria di Mariano Rocchi è pervenuto al Museo nello stesso anno anche un altro affresco staccato, che rappresenta La Madonna di Loreto con due angeli che proviene dalla chiesa di Sant’Eraclio a Foligno.
Il primo è firmato da Bartolommeo da Miranda e datato 1449. Il secondo con grande probabilità, è lavoro di un sequace di Nicolò Alunno dei anni 1480. Il terzo affresco è molto danneggiato, fu dipinto nei primi decenni del XVI secolo; la composizione è molto vicino alla Madonna di Loreto con quattro angeli nella chiesa di Santa Maria Infraportas in Foligno e le figure degli angeli appartengono stilisticamente alla figura di San Rocco nella chiesa castellana di Santa Croce di Sant’Eraclio.

Paolo Lunghi, il primo fotografo di Assisi, e Domenico Brizi, conservatore, sono stati fra i nuovi allievi di Leon Battista Cavalcaselle negli anni 1870-80 ad Assisi. Entrambi partecipavano anche alla vita del mercato d’arte dell’epoca. Con grande certezza Brizi è stato colui che ha staccato dal muro i tre affreschi di San Crispino ad Assisi, mentre Lunghi li ha venduti nel 1895 a Károly Pulszky, il primo direttore del Museo di Belle Arti di Budapest.
Questi affreschi provenivano appunto dall’edificio medioevale della Confraternita di San Crispino di Assisi in via S. Agnese 11. Si tratta di opere che sono state eseguite indipendentemente l’una dall’altra. Il primo affresco, San Bartolomeo, appartiene stilisticamente alla mano di Pace di Bartolo, che fu attivo ad Assisi dal 1344 al 1368. Il secondo affresco, San Francesco riceve le stigmate, fu dipinto verso la metà del Trecento. Il terzo, Un episodio della vita di San Egidio, con grande probabilità è un’opera del Maestro di San Crispino del secondo decennio del XIV secolo. Nella collezione della Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi si trovano altri affreschi di questo maestro, che sono stati eseguiti per la stessa confraternita. 
Prima di appartenere alla Confraternita di San Crispino, questo edificio, dal quale vennero staccati gli affreschi, era di proprietà della Confraternita di Santa Maria Maggiore o del Vescovado, uno delle prime e più grandi confraternite dei flagellanti di Assisi. Si può supporre che l’affresco di Maria con bambino e cinque membri di una confraternita flagellante oggi a Budapest, apparteneva originariamente allo stesso edificio. Anche questo affresco infatti era stato comprato da Paolo Lunghi insieme alle altre pitture della Confraternita di San Crispino.

The fragmented Crucifixion and a bust of the Blessing Christ frescoes of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts originally belonged to the same series of wall paintings of the facade of the Ospedale di Santa Caterina in Assisi, according to the documents related to their purchase. Károly Pulszky, the first director of the museum bought them in 1893. Based on their style, the frescoes in Budapest are works of Umbrian artists active in different moments of the 14th century. The Crucifixion can be dated to the 1340’s, the bust of Christ appear to be some two or three decades later and presumably formed part of a different project.
The first surviving written document from the Convent of Saint Catherine in Assisi is dated to 1259. Most of the original walls of the St. Catherine convent still stand today. Giacomo Lauro’s late 16th century engraving is of great help in the ideal reconstruction of the church of St. Catherine and the adjacent buildings. The two buildings along the flank of the church are evidently the two convent buildings. The lower building is most likely the Ospedale.
Originally, the inside walls of church of St. Catherine were also decorated with frescoes. These frescoes are generally of about the middle of the 14th century. The fresco depicting the kneeling figure of St. Stephen is very close to the Crucifixion fresco in Budapest.

kifestések nyomait. A 13. században épült templom
figurális falképeire ma leginkább az 19O7-ben készült
akvarellmásolatokból következtethetünk.
